How to discharge an eFoil battery?

Hey everyone,

If you’re like me, you’ve probably ended a session early or had a trip canceled with a 100% charged battery, which we all know is terrible for long-term cell health.

I followed discussions on Facebook that people built their own small devices to discharge the battery. See example picture attached.

I am not talented enough to built such a device. Nor would I put my 4k USD battery on it. As such I had to go to the water to bring the battery charge level down.

Back in October I found out (after owning an Aerofoils) board for 4 years that the Audi e-tron foil battery can discharge itself.

Apparently, they have a built-in discharge function that you can trigger with a button press—no need to go run the motor in a tank or out on the lake just to get down to storage voltage. And my biggest surprise was that this feature is there since 2022. I can’t believe that I missed it. It is written into the manual.

Here is a video about this feature:

Has anyone else used this feature yet? I’m curious if other brands (Lift, Flite, etc.) have similar “hidden” button sequences or if they’ are still stuck doing it the hard way…

In order for that to occur, the battery must have resistors inside that turn the electrical energy into heat. The Flite cells don’t. You can use a simple automotive 24v lamp to discharge the battery - I have done this myself.

Just get the connectors and wire the bulb(s) to match the voltage of the battery (I think it’s 24V).
